“Long on Love”—Moonlady Night at the Lake

Moonlady and East Dallasite Amy Martin hosted another evening of fun and friendship at the Bath House Cultural Center on March 31. From drumming to henna tattoos, Indian food to folk music, Moonlady newsletter subscribers—who usually "see" each other only online—gathered in the flesh.

This Moonlady Night at the lake was but the latest in Amy's fifteen-year series of seasonal events. The events have drawn as many as two thousand celebrants to the lake for merry-making.

The Moonlady events have spawned an internet-based community and newsletter (known to the internet-savvy as a "listserv") with 2500 members from the North Texas area. Started as a way to notify friends about Moonlady events, the newsletter has grown into a community of what Amy calls "cultural creatives."

On any given day, Moonlady subscribers might hear about "holistic (yoga, meditation, body and energy work, nutrition, massage) topics; progressive causes (women’s rights, animals, environment, populist activism, peace); non-mainstream spirituality (Buddhism, Unity, pagan, Unitarian, New Age, New Thought, interfaith); philosophy and psychology; art and creative expression; eclectic performance and activities," according to Amy.

The first Moonlady Night, held last September, was the first time the listserv gathered in the flesh. The event was part of the 25th anniversary celebrations for the Bath House Cultural Center at White Rock Lake. Amy says, "It was SRO in the auditorium, and crowded in the lobby, back porch and outdoor amphitheatre all night long."

"I think the people on my listserv are the greatest in the world. They have a lot of heart and integrity. They walk their talk in ways that astound me. We be the change we want to see and we create that world every time we gather, even if just for a few hours. We are short on dogma but long on love. We are one."
